Smoke line, a national ant-smoking hotline, managed by the NHS Heath Scotland, has had its lines choked with the increased influx of phone calls, following the smoking ban in Scotland since Sunday, last. // The line which normally receives about 100 calls a day, registered a four fold increase of almost 450 calls a day, post ban

Other Anti smoking help lines equally faced an increased flow of calls. This is a shot in the arm for the anti-smoking drive, and campaigners believe, the ban will certainly bring down the number of smokers in England.

An NHS Spokeswoman said “We are absolutely delighted in the increased interest this week. It follows a successful year for Smoke line in which we have expanded our support services in response to growing demand."

Maureen Moore, chief executive of the anti-smoking group ASH Scotland, said: "It's great to hear about the rise in calls to Smoke line and we're delighted that people are using the ban as motivation to quit smoking. Getting specialist help like this really increases your chances of success, too. Seventy per cent of Scots smokers say they would like to stop, and smoke-free public places will support them to quit by removing the cues that often make people relapse."
