Smokers blow up £90,000 in a Lifetim

A study in the UK calculated the lifetime cost of smoking about 15 cigarettes a day and the amount calculated comes to a staggering £91,832.43 or approx . US $150,000 or Rs. 6,000.000 // . This figure is worked out at 373,302 cigarettes smoked, or 18,665 packs.

The study was helped by ‘Clerical Medical’. It found that the average smoker has 15.24 cigarettes a day, costing them 106.68 pounds a week. In a year the smoker blows up 6,060 cigarettes at an average cost of £1,493.22. and collectively the English nation puffs up 72 BILLION cigs a year and blows a staggering 17 Billion pounds up in smoke. Interesting figures to a health economist!!

The taxation on cigarettes by British Govt is fairly high. Mr. Willmore, a spokesman for Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) said: “This survey shows just how wasteful and addictive smoking is. Not only could it kill you but it costs you enormous amounts of money to feed the habit,”

Clerical Medical Chief John Hiew said: “We all know about the health problems associated with smoking but we wanted to find the wealth implications associated with the habit. It’s a staggering amount of money British smokers spend.”

He added:” If people put the money they spend on cigarettes into a savings plan they would probably live longer and could have an extra income of thousands of pounds a year.”

Interesting results of the survey also showed that 83 per cent of the 3,000 smokers questioned in the survey had tried giving up smoking at least three times. About 33% said that this had lasted only a couple of days, for another third it lasted for two months and 15 per cent managed to give it up for a year..

Smoking causes bronchitis, asthma, Lung Cancer, bladder cancer and many other cancers and diseases- if the collective cost of their healthcare is taken into account this figure would perhaps triple.
