Skin Cancer Cream Has A Protective Effect On Prematurely Aged Skin?

The findings of a new study show that Aldara (imiquimod) Cream 5 percent, which is a topical skin cancer cream, could also halt the process of premature aging and improve the complexion of the skin to a fair degree.// The cream also showed marked improvement in fine lines, wrinkles, dyspigmentations and texture.

Researchers at the S.K.I.N. Incorporated, a dermatology research facility presented these findings at the 64th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology in San Francisco. Aldara Cream is used to treat a pre-cancerous condition called actinic keratoses (AK) and basal cell carcinoma. Such conditions are usually a result of chronic exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun which cause photodamaged skin, which in turn is characterized by fine lines and wrinkles, roughness, dryness, lack of firmness and irregular pigmentation. "Our results indicate that Aldara Cream may offer patients cosmetic benefits in addition to its important therapeutic role in treating precancerous and cancerous skin lesions," said Albert Kligman, MD, PhD, Professor Emeritus of Dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania and lead investigator in this study. "We initiated this study after anecdotal finding that some AK patients treated with Aldara Cream reported cosmetic improvements to their skin. Further exploration of the cosmetic uses for Aldara Cream is clearly warranted." The current study consisted of ten females with visible signs of photodamage. They were asked to apply Aldara Cream five times per week for four weeks. They rated the improvement as "moderate" or "great." It was found that 90 percent expressed satisfaction about the cosmetic effects of the cream. Contact: Marianne Stoudemayer, S.K.I.N.
