Skimpily Dressed Dolls Send Wrong Cues to Young Girls

A team of psychologists have expressed concern over the influence of scantily clad dolls on young minds, which could be creating// a wrong self-image. This could be one important reason for the rise of eating disorders, they aver.

An American Psychological Association communiqué has voiced apprehension regarding the hype created by the media about such dolls, like the famous Bratz dolls or the Barbie, which are known for their hour glass figures and revealing clothes. This could be sending wrong cues to young minds, psychologists say.

The APA felt strongly that the presence of such dolls in the market could create an urge among young girls to comply with the so-called image to feel ‘wanted’ in the peer group. This could affect their self-esteem in a big way, and could be the reason behind behavioral problems in the future.

While stressing the importance of parental influence, teachers and friends in shaping young minds, the report also emphasized the importance of enabling children with the right inputs, so that they get the right messages.

In the words of the APA Chairman Eileen Zurbriggen, 'The consequences of the sexualization of girls in media are likely to be a negative influence on girl's healthy development. We have ample evidence to conclude that sexualization has negative effects in a variety of domains, including cognitive functioning, physical and mental health, and healthy sexual development.'
