SUNDSVALL, Sweden - Swedish authorities panicked when a seagull suspected to have bird flu was brought to the laboratory.// Veterinarians in Sundsvall took extra precautions in handling the bird thinking that the dreaded bird flu had made its was to Scandinavia.

Reports of sick poultry throughout Europe prompted the Swedish authorities to take the strictest measures after the gull was brought to them with a yellow fluid coming from its beak and anus. The gull was lying on its back and was kicking about itself. It has now emerged that the gull was actually drunk. Swedish experts put the bird to sleep and theorized that it had eaten yeast at a nearby garbage dump and had hence gotten intoxicated.

The bird flu scare is well and truly here to stay. Experts fear that any resulting pandemic could kill millions, as there is no cure for the deadly disease if the H5N1 virus mutates and starts spreading easily from person to person. Currently, the bird flu does not spread through direct contact, but experts including those from the World Health Organization (WHO) fear that if a mutation does occur there will be chaos across the globe. Countries are preparing on a war footing to combat the disease. An anti-viral drug called Tamiflu is being stocked up. Hungary had announced that it had a vaccine for the current strain of the avian flu and countries are queuing up to buy the same. The disease has claimed nearly 70 lives in South East Asia so far.
