In a startling revelation, some researchers have discerned a thread of similarity running between owners and their pet dogs, portraying glaring likeness of character. //For instance, it was observed that owners of ferocious aggressive breeds, like pit bulls, invariably had a past criminal record compared to owners of milder breeds, which are registered and licensed.

During a study of 355 dog owners in Ohio, it was found that owners of breeds, which were notorious for ferocity, had a record of convictions due to violations of law. Further, nearly 30% of such owners had also failed to comply with the registration formalities and were often pulled up for violations of law. In comparison, the owners of milder pedigree dogs had a miniscule 1% amongst them as offenders.

"Owners of vicious dogs who have been cited for failing to register a dog (or) failing to keep a dog confined on the premises ... are more than nine times more likely to have been convicted for a crime involving children, three times more likely to have been convicted of domestic violence ... and nearly eight times more likely to be charged with drug (crimes) than owners of low-risk licensed dogs," said Jaclyn Barnes of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Centre.
