Shocked out of drugs?

The idea of subjecting drug addicts to shock therapy as a means to wean them off drugs has always attracted debates and controversies. Now, the Scottish Executive is doing more research into this form of therapy //.

Shock therapy technically labeled as Neuro-Electric Therapy (NET) is executed with the use of self-adhesive electrodes inserted behind the ear through which electric pulses are sent into the brain. This is known to bring about a reduction in the urge to consume drugs.

Professor Neil McKeganey, who is quite an expert on drugs said” One of the reasons it's terribly difficult for addicts to get off these drugs is the cravings are very strong. One of the benefits of NET, at least as it has been claimed, is that it allows addicts to cope with those feelings of cravings."

In his estimate, NET needs to be researched further and is no means to a permanent cure.
