A world-wide survey which has sought to understand sexual behaviors has revealed, the abiding worries about the rise in pre-marital sex //in the present day are baseless and monogamy is still very popular and sacrosanct. The results of this survey are published in The Lancet.

The research has collated information from 59 countries, which showed that many had just a single recent sexual partner and the propensity for marriage and live-in relationships were certainly present in the horizon.

These findings give credence to the recent information enabled by the Office of National Statistics, which was published recently, that underlined the monogamous nature of the British society, notwithstanding the escalation in sexually transmitted disease (STDs) and the increase in teenage pregnancies.

The authors said “Most people are married, and married people have the most sex. Sexual activity among young single people tends to be sporadic, but is greater in industrialized countries.”

Kaye Wellings, of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the lead-researcher, said: “In Britain, the average age at which people lose their virginity is 16 for both men and women. The latest estimates suggest 12.5 per cent of boys and 6.9 per cent of girls have had sex before the age of 15, but these figures may be skewed by the tendency of boys to exaggerate sexual activity.”
