Separate and Specific Health Care Facilities for Muslims

According to a British Muslim scholar a special and specific health care should be provided for British Muslims. Professor Aziz Sheikh of Edinburgh University// believes that this could hold the key for better health for Muslims in United Kingdom.

While sharing his thoughts in the British Medical Journal, professor reiterates the need for academicians, doctors and policy makers to realize this need and bring about a change in the existing system.

A provision for facilities to perform infant male circumcision should be provided by National Health Services. This would prevent the poorer patients from resorting to cheaper, unhealthy and unsafe ways. They should be allowed to see the doctor of the same sex. NHS should clearly understand the religious affectations of this community and act accordingly.

But a Department of Health spokesperson on condition of maintaining anonymity replied that such programmes are not possible as they would alienate the Muslims from the mainstream. He also said that National Institute of Clinical Excellence has not approved male circumcision. While it is practical to adopt a mid-path by formulating specific programmes to take care of certain sections of community, it is not possible to meet all the demands.
