Scottish Hospitals Have 1000 Alcohol-Related Cases Each Week

A new report available with the Scottish Parliament says that almost a thousand people end up in the hospital each week due to drink-related problems. // The report, which was available in the parliament yesterday, showed that "51,599 people were discharged from a general acute hospital last year." This was indeed a massive jump when compared with just 13,890 a decade and a half ago. "The problem is growing at an alarming rate, so we need action now to ensure this toll on the nation's health is addressed. We need real action to combat the source of binge-drinking on communities across the country, not more of the same inaction," said Shona Robison, SNP health spokeswoman "At the moment the bulk of executive advertising tends to focus on parents with children approaching puberty. But in reality we need to start educating people about the dangers of alcohol before that," said Dr Nanette Milne, Tory health spokeswoman. It emerged that most drink problems resulted in cirrhosis, hepatitis and liver failure. The Executive has taken this report seriously and hopes that the recent measures banning happy hours drinking can help tone down the problem.
