( The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has...)Salmonella Scare Results in the Recall of Sesame Seed,Health

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a warning to the public not to consume sesame seeds in and around Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia as it could be contaminated with salmonella.

The packaging of the product has been done by Les Aliments G. Dion. The Quebec based company has voluntarily recalled the product from the market.

Salmonella contaminated food does not appear bad nor does it smell bad. But the consumption of such food article can cause salmonellosis, a food borne illness.

salmonellosis may cause short-term symptoms that include vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, severe headache and high fever in healthy people. In case of young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, salmonellosis may cause serious and sometimes deadly infections. Sometimes Long-term complications may include severe arthritis.

So far, there has been no case of anyone reporting sick from consuming the contaminated seed.

The products affected by this alert are:

1. GD Sesame seed, sold as a 50 g package bearing UPC 6 20383 01055 9 and the lot codes 02W08S, 03W13S, 03W27S, 03W29S, 04W11S, 04W16S, 04W23S, 05W07S and 05W29S.

2. Sesame seeds, sold as a 1.0 kg package bearing UPC 6 20383 60355 3 and the lot codes 02W28S, 04W13S and 05W29S.
