Certainly not news for the faint hearted - there is a 1 in 300 chance of dying through a medical mistake or misjudgement// , a senior doctor in England Sir Liam Donaldson has said in a cautionary message . Sir Liam was hightlighting this issue on behalf of the WHO's campaign on the need for hospitals to address hygiene issues and improve the safety aspect of healthcare.

These figures beat the chances of dying in an aircrash hollow , where the odds are 1 in 10 million , according to Sir Liam , based on evidence from the scheduled airlines.

Hospital aquired infections are responsible for at least 5000 deaths in England yearly , which means upto 10% of people admitted to hospitals. Several deaths have occured due to Clostridium difficile and 360 have died of MRSA in 2004.

However Sir Liam added that contracting hospital infection is not the only danger , complications from surgeries also need to be prevented , by standardising the procedures.
