SARS Transmitted By Civet Cat – Say Scientists In Chin

A recent research by China-Hong Kong experts concluded that there is a genetic link between SARS in civet cats and humans and that SARS is transmitted to human beings through// civet cats. The results were revealed in the Chinese Information Times newspaper on Thursday.

The research that was carried out in six civet cats, by the Center for Disease Control and Protection in Beijing and Guangzhou, in cooperation with the university of Hong Kong, matched in terms of genetic alignment of the SARS corona virus, which was found in a waitress in Guangzhou in 2004. This evidence resulted in a permanent ban on the sale and consumption of civet cats by Guangdong authorities and thousands of civet cats were culled.

Moreover, police officials in Guangzhou have announced a citywide campaign to fight the illegal sale of wild animals, particularly civet cats - the paper said. Wang Ming, an official from the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention has advised the public to be cautious about eating wild animals, particularly civet cats.
