Russia has recorded almost 30,000 new AIDS infections in the past year, raising fears of a surge of sexually-transmitted diseases with many urban centres portraying a majority of AIDS cases. // It is estimated that nearly 350,000 people are HIV-positive in Russia, although the real figures may have crossed one million.

What Russia needs to do on an urgent basis is to improve the quality of medical services for the infected people. It is said that only a miniscule number of infected people, actually receive anti-retroviral therapy from the state. Now, the state council is looking for ways to impart education to young Russians, especially the school going teenagers.
