Obese Kids are being made to run , as part of the drive kick started by Ulster's first hospital-run fitness 'club', where doctors are doing whatever it takes// to create awareness of the new age malady-Obesity.

Coleraine-based Causeway Trust, flagged off a pilot programme for 12 weeks that brought into its fold, 16 clinically obese children and their parents. This programme turned so successful that most children not only shed the weight but also maintained the weight loss. If this programme spread across the province, it would undoubtedly make a sea change in the lives of many Ulster generations.

This was particularly need of the hour, especially after many reports warning high obesity rates amongst children in Northern Ireland cropped up. Consistent efforts were necessary to combat the lurking dangers of obesity and associated illnesses like diabetes. Causeway obesity experts also initiated a scheme to enable obese children with an array of games and physical activities such as swimming, karate, mini-golf and mini-athletics as well as housing one to one interactive nutrition programs.

A Causeway spokeswoman said "Research shows that up to 10% of children in Northern Ireland are now obese. It is estimated that by 2020, one in five boys and one in three girls will be obese. As these figures indicate, we are now facing a major problem and the medical consequences of childhood obesity include increased risk of heart disease, hypertension, type II diabetes and some cancers. If the current trend continues the next generation of children will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents."
