Rift Valley Fever Outbreak in Nairobi

Rift valley Fever has been identified in at least ten districts of Nairobi. This was announced by the live stock minister Joseph Munyao.//

Mr Munyao declared that 100,000 doses of vaccines are being distributed to the each of the affected districts. Ten thousand litres of insecticides have also been handed over to these places. Till date one hundred people are reported to be dead due to RVF and four hundred cases are reported sick.

RVF in its previous bouts of attack has affected the socio economic status of the country. Munyao also confirmed that export market is not affected as shipment to overseas was completed before the outbreak of disease.

Rift valley Fever (RFL) is a viral disease which is spread by mosquitoes and affects animals like sheep, cattle and goats. It is spread to human beings through the bite of the infected mosquito. The RVF virus belongs to Phlebovirus genus belonging to Bunyaviridae. family.

Headache, fever, muscle pain, back ache are the common symptoms. In severe cases persons may suffer from vomiting blood, passing blood through urine and bleeding from nose or gums.

The minister also added that government has spent around Sh170 million in controlling this viral outbreak and all quarantine measures are strictly adhered to.
