Four new genes have been identified which could presumably play a major role in the development// of breast cancer,

These new genes were narrowed down after examination of tumor tissue from 53 breast cancer patients. In addition breast cancer cell lines were also studied which confirmed the findings. This new discovery could provide a basis for new treatment for the disease, which is haunting women. Our improved understanding of cancer biology and genetic basis of cancer have made the finding possible. It is not only an exciting advance towards understanding how breast cancer develops, but also opens up new vistas that could lead to discovery of genes linked to the disease.

Thanks to the latest DNA microarray technology, which has enabled scientists to analyze the expression of many genes at the same time and search for the breast cancer genes. This cutting edge technology is believed to trigger a parallel increase in the speed at which new cancer treatments reach the patient.

It has been reported that tumors that are aggressive have multiple copies of the genes and if these results are confirmed, it might provide a lead for targeted therapies in these cases.
