A large multinational population study had brought into focus that restless leg syndrome// may remain under-diagnosed and untreated in people and in turn severely hamper the quality of life for them.

Restless leg syndrome is a disorder of neurological origin. This condition happens when the urge to move one’s legs becomes strong even if the person is stationary. The people suffering from the condition suffer from sensations like burning or itching, or even sensations of something crawling on their legs. These sensations are termed as paresthesias or dysesthesias, and may range from unpleasant to painful.

Researchers had studies the case reports of 15,391 participants and noted the incidents of experiencing the syndrome in the past year, the frequency and the nature of the conditions, the degree of physical stress associated with the condition, the nature of treatment taken etc.

The results showed that 7.2% of the population had showed the symptoms of restless leg syndrome. 81% of them had reported their condition to their medical practitioners of whom only 6.2 percent were diagnosed with the disease. Most of them were diagnosed with poor circulation, arthritis and back problems.

The incidences of the condition were twice as high for women as is for men.
