Reservation For SC/ST Candidates Under 50% All India Quota

In the application filed before the Hon’ble Supreme Court, the Central Government proposed 15% reservation// to SCs and 7-1/2% to ST candidates in the All India Quota seats of Post Graduate medical/dental course admissions from the academic session 2007-08. While disposing of this application for directions filed by the Central Government in Buddhi Prakash Sharma case Vs Union of India, WP 18/2006, Hon’ble Supreme Court on 31st January, 2007, allowed the Central Government to implement this proposal from the academic session 2007-08.

This was pursuant to writ petition pending in the Supreme Court, which found mention in the prospectus for All India Entrance Examination for M.D./M.S./PG Diploma and MDS courses, 2007 issued by AIIMS, New Delhi. It was clearly mentioned therein that “presently there is no reservation for any category in All India Quota P.G. seats. There may be reservation for SC/ST candidates, which will be subject to the final outcome of the Writ Petition (Civil) No. 138/2006, pending in the Hon’ble Supreme Court. If there is any change in the existing policy, the same will be published in the newspapers and will be put on AIIMS website”.

Accordingly, now the prospectus stands modified to the extent by which 15% of All India Quota seats will be allotted in favour of SC candidates and 7.5% in favour of ST candidates. There is, however, no change in the quantum of All India Quota PG seats, which is 50% as, directed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court earlier and remaining 50% of the seats are earmarked for the concerned State Governments.
