Research explains why postmenopausal women accumulate abdominal fat.,,

Women often had complained of a sudden increase in weight, especially around// their abdominal area, after reaching menopause.

For women, this sudden influx of weight often results in obesity that brings with it a new set of problems like a rise in type 2 diabetes cases, cardiovascular diseases and other related health disorders.

Researchers say that this weight gain may be due to a drop in the estrogen levels of the body that releases a hormone called cortisol. Women who underwent hormone replacement therapy had a low level of the hormone cortisol. For women who did not have the hormone replacement therapy, the higher levels of the cortisol was related to the accumulation of fat in the waist and below areas.

Researchers feel that by preventing this increase in cortisol it is possible to control the sudden weight gain for the women in the postmenopausal group.

The researchers had treated postmenopausal women, who did not have hormone replacement therapy, with a synthetic form of estrogen. After one month of therapy, these women had a lower level of the hormone cortisol and also reported a lowering of body weights.
