Remedy for Cervical cancer just a ‘shot’ awy

Human Pappiloma Virus, a common virus which causes most genital warts, is also held responsible for almost 75% of all cervical cancers//. Statistics claim that over 2,800 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and one-third of them succumb to it each year in the UK.

A vaccine named Gardsil have been developed which has been proved effective in protecting humans from the most dangerous strains of the common HPV virus thus also in the bigger perspective gives protection from cervical cancer.

The vaccine is licenced for use among boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 15 and among women between ages 16 and 26.However the government of UK still has not issued guidance regarding its use in the NHS. Hence there is a possibility of GP’s refraining from prescribing it .

It is strongly recommended that the vaccine should be administered to young girls before they become sexually active as HPV is known to be transmitted by sexual contact. Almost 80% of the population is suspected to be infected with this virus.
