Reliable Help For Smokers From Nicotine Patches and Former Smokers

Orlando: According to researchers, the support from a group of ex-smokers combined with nicotine patch, may be a good way to assist women smokers in public houses , to kick the habit. //

Dr. Jeanette Andrews, nursing professor at the Medical College of Georgia observed 103 women smokers. About 50% of them were asked to use nicotine patch and behavioral treatment from nurses combined with help from other smokers and community health wokers. Weekly group sessions on empowerment, and prayer meetings were organised for six weeks.

The remaining half of the women were exposed to articles that help stop smoking and meetings organised by the nurses on Health topics, like hypertension, nutrition, exercise and self-esteem.

The findings reported that Fifty percent of women smokers kicked the habbit after the six-week treatment program in which the ex-smokers partcipated, as compared to only 8% of women who quit smoking in the comparison group.

These findings were presented by Andrews at the12th Annual Meeting of the Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco's in Orlando, Fla.
