The Government Doctors’ Association of Tamil Nadu has called for designational equality with the private medical colleges in the State. //

According to the association, the move will not add to the monetary burden of the State neither will it exempt the government doctors from performing their assigned tasks, such as night shifts.

The association has also requested the Government to look into the deficiency of staff in non-clinical postgraduate courses, and to focus on re-designating assistant professors, with 5 years experience teaching in medical colleges, as readers.

According to K.Prakasam, the association’s president, this move of redesignating assistant professors in accordance with the norms of the medical council of India (MCI), ensures that there are enough senior professors to choose for the post of Dean.

The haziness in this issue started with the MCI norms, which until then were mere guidelines, being made mandatory in the year 2000.

A teaching medical college with 7 units is assigned 3 Post Graduate (PG) seats per unit. A PG course is for3 years and each unit should have a total strength of 45.Each unit; at present has strength of 20 students.

The MCI, in the past 6 years has cut down the number of PG seats due to the lack of qualified teachers.

The association suggests that the students be considered for continued service, as it will ensure that adequate numbers of teachers are available on a routine basis.
