Reduce eye infection through new-age contact lenses

It is possible to reduce eye infections like keratitis by wearing the latest silicone hydro gel lenses for longer hours, reports British Journal// of Ophthalmology.

Scientists showed that study done on contact lens wearers for daily wear or extended wear contact lenses have varied results on the incidence of non-severe keratitis and severe keratitis. The researchers had observed contact lens wearers for a 12-month hospital based study and had used a clinical severity matrix to differentiate between of non-severe keratitis and severe keratitis.

The results showed that lens wearers who sleep in contact lenses (extended wear) tended to have a higher incidence of severe keratitis than those who use the lens only during waking hours (daily wear). However newer silicone hydro gel lenses seem to give a five times better protection against severe keratitis to people who wear lens for extended use. The usual hydro gel lenses do not give as much protection to the eyes against severe infections as compared to the latest innovative lenses.

Contact lenses have become a way of life for many, for their corrective use as well as cosmetic use. And yet the problem of keratitis remains. The recent study may bring relief to people who use contact lenses for extended wear and yet are sufferers of severe keratitis.
