Red alert to women against red meat consumption

Recent studies have come up with incriminating evidence that warns non-vegetarians who binge on red meat to do so with caution.// One study has pointed out that eating more than one and a half servings of red meat raises the risk of developing hormone related breast cancer and another study that vitamin supplements seem less than beneficial in actually shielding the heart from heart diseases except for vitamin C which seems to show some benefit to women with high risk of developing heart problems and stroke.

The results of the study on red meat were published in Archives of Internal Medicine and the American heart Association presented its views regarding vitamins and its benefits at a conference in Chicago. These studies come under a lime light as both examines diseases women often dread to suffer from.

In this first ever major study which disseminated the effects of vitamin C independently to study its effect on cardiac health more than 8,000 women were randomly assigned to take Vitamin C or beta carotene alone for almost a decade along with an additional 5,442 women taking folic acid and vitamin supplements regularly for almost 7 years.

There was very minimal cardiac benefits noted in this mammoth study and researchers caution that people should not consume than for cardiac benefit. No new cardiac illnesses developed in those women on vitamin E supplements who already presented with some prior heart abnormality.

The observations regarding consumption of meat was made by The Nurses’ Health Study that tracked the diets and health of more than 90,000 women in their twenties ,thirties, forties and early fifties when they enrolled for this study almost twenty years ago.

Meat consumption was linked to increased incidence of tumors that are triggered off by the influence of progesterone and oestrogen –the female hormones .although the research showed that the same group of women who ate more red meat were also more likel
