Bird flu was first detected in October near Danube Delta, Romania. But now new cases of deaths of birds have been reported recently. //

The bird flu disaster is slowly creeping in all directions from the Danube Delta. This delta is a largest wetland in Europe and is an important migratory route for all the birds that come to Europe.

Health officials today reported that more than 16 villages have been infected with bird flu.

Bird flu is caused by the deadly strain H5N1. This strain not only infects birds but also is fatal to man.

In Asia 133 people had been infected and 68 were dead when it caused havoc in 2003.Since the disease is spreading widely in all directions tests for the early detection of bird flu in the avian population is conducted in and around the highly infected area.

So far hens in the villages of Odaile and Braesti have shown positive for this deadly strain (H5N1).

The virus is moving toward west in the direction of one of the most highly populated area. Samples of the infected birds (hens & poultry) were sent to Britain to confirm whether it is due to the H5N1 strain.

Though H5N1 virus has so far not infected and spread the disease to human, people are scared that this strain might change in to a form which will be contracted by the humans.

If the strain mutates then it will result in a deadly disease killing millions of people.
