A certain gonorrhea strain has titillated the curiosity of investigators, by defying the norm. A key enzyme, called prolyliminopeptidase//, which helps in the diagnosis of the disease, is absent in this strain of gonorrhea. The existing diagnostic evaluation methods do not recognize this new strain, making detection of gonorrhea extremely difficult.

The enzyme in question, playing truant in this odd strain of gonorrhea, was perceived to be present in all types of gonorrheal strains. While investigating, Dr Magnus Unemo from Orebro University Hospital in Sweden and colleagues found that gonorrhea strains detected in countries like Australia, New Zealand and Scotland were of a rare kind and did not fit the bill of known strains of this disease. Infact, it bore some resemblance to the gonorrhea strain behind the English and Danish Outbreak.

According to the researchers, the most important factor is to enhance the awareness of gonorrheal strains worldwide. This would also call for changes in the manner of detection of this disease in many geographical areas, where it has spread.
