Public Warned About Fake Drugs

Trading standards officers have issued a warning to the public that they could end up buying harmful fakes if they purchased prescription drugs through the Internet//.

Drugs such as Viagra, Tamiflu, Prozac and Valium, bought from foreign websites, have often turned out to be fakes or contaminated.

Nigel Strick, the council's trading standards manager, said partaking of drugs without a prescription can turn out to be extremely dangerous.

"We warn people that it is most inadvisable to seek to obtain such drugs without medical guidance and a prescription. They are playing a dangerous game of Russian roulette if they do. Beyond that very real danger, there is also the risk that the drugs may not arrive at all or could be counterfeit, and it would be extremely difficult to get money back from a seller based abroad." he added.

Misuse or excessive doses of prescription drugs could have deleterious consequences, the Royal College of General Practitioners announced.

The purchase of medicines in the UK, is regulated by the Medicines Act of 1968, but the suppliers abroad are not subject to these legalities.
