Provisional Fees For Medical Courses Fixed By Punjab Government

The provisional fees for admittance into various medical courses offered by unaided medical institutions have been fixed by the medical education and research department// of the Punjab government. The courses include MBBS, BDS, BHMS, BAMS and other similar medical and paramedical courses.

Representatives of medical institutions and students have also been invited for a consultation regarding the actual fees to be fixed for other individual institutions. The provisional course fees for MBBS, BDS, BHMS and BAMS has been fixed at Rs 1 lakh, Rs 50,000, and Rs 35, 000 respectively, on an annual basis.

Students to be admitted during the academic year 2006-07 would have to pay this provisional fee until a decision regarding the actual fee is arrived at. The same rule applies to second and third year students who had been admitted in the years 2004-05 and 2005-06.

With respect to hostel accommodation charges, a general independent room has been priced at Rs 12, 000 per year, which is inclusive of hostel fee and the security advance. The provisional fee for a special room consisting of an attached bathroom and AC has been fixed at Rs 20,000 per annum. The refundable security allowance has been fixed at Rs 10, 000. Mess charges would be calculated on the basis of actual expenditure and would have to be managed by the students themselves.

Electricity and water charges, however are not included in the above mentioned fee structure, said KS Pannu, special secretary of the medical education and research department. The fee fixation for private medical institutions by the Punjab Government is in accordance with the Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fee and Making of Reservation Act, 2003 (Section 7).

However, before the government can decide on the provisional fee, it has to take into account the viewpoints expressed by student representatives studying in such institutions, representatives of students who wish to study in the educational institutions and the private educational institutions themselves, which offer various health science courses.
