Protest against G.O. No. 19

Protest against the G.O. No.19 continued for the second day with medicos demanding its withdrawal. They have also called for the suspension of the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar of NTR University// of Health Sciences.

GO No 19, issued by the state government proposed to provide an increase of clinical and non-clinical PG medical seats to service candidates. The new proposal was issued only one week before the commencement of the PG medical counselling.

The agitating students allege that the State Government had issued a GO No 15 only two years before that provided for reservation for service candidates in the increased PG medical seats.

And now with the new GO the seats of the service candidates have been doubled. As a result about 50 per cent of the seats have remained unfilled due to non-availability of candidates. This resulted in a loss of opportunity for the non-service candidates.

Osmania Medical College doctors have chosen a novel way of airing their grievances. They have organized a skit showing the Government doctors disturbing the wedding of the Health Secretary, the bridegroom with Merit, the rightful bride who in turn arranged the Health Secretary's marriage with a rich bride, corruption. The Andhra Pradesh Medical Students' Association (APMSA) intervenes during this commotion and gets the Health Secretary married to Merit.

Medicos at other medical colleges, across the state also held protests. At the Gandhi Medical College effigies of the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar were burnt.

The students have also alleged that the university authorities had added nine marks for the service candidates to make them qualify in the entrance examination.
