A revolutionary technology for prostate cancer is being used in a leading private hospital in New Delhi. They are treating prostate problems by using new laser technology. This will pave way for further 'bloodless' surgeries. //
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital Wednesday said that with its new KTP laser, surgery would become a bloodless procedure and patients could go home within 24 hours. Earlier, patients had to stay at least five days in hospital and faced several complications.
S.K. Sama, chairman of the hospital board, said with the adoption of KTP laser technology to remove benign prostatic hyperplasia (BHP), the facility had become India's first private hospital to use the pathbreaking technology in urology.
'KTP laser can treat all cases of benign prostatic enlargement and it evaporates enlarged prostate tissues without harming other tissues and cells,' Sama told reporters.
S.N. Wadhwa, head of the department of urology, said the new technology could prove beneficial for foreigners coming to India for treatment.
Prostate enlargement is a condition that causes urinary problems in nearly half of all men over 50 years. By the age of 80, around 80 percent men have enlarged prostates.
The new technology uses a laser fibre that burns enlarged prostate tissues and is less painful. The hospital procured the technology from the US and experts from Spain trained doctors at the hospital.
The cost of the surgery is around Rs.110,000 ($2,400). According to experts, the same procedure costs about Rs.4.5 million ($98,300) in the US.
R. Vostarek, a patient from Austria, said: 'Though I have had the complication for over five years, the technology was not available in my country. The best part is, the operation costs many times less in India.'
