Preventive Services Not Offered To Most Americans

According to a study it was found that a number of Americans do not receive preventive medical care. //Preventive measures, like a daily dose of aspirin, colon cancer screening, childhood vaccinations, blood pressure screening, Chlamydia screening for young women, immunizing adults against the flu and pneumonia and smoking-cessation therapy are all effective ways to live longer and healthier lives. The study’s results were published online by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. More than 8,000 studies were analysed before reaching a conclusion. Non-profit groups ranked about 25 Prevention and HealthPartners Research Foundation services based on their service and cost.

The report says that these preventive services should be consistently offered to the Americans. This would result in a decrease in the mortality rate and fewer people would suffer from diseases that are preventable. Ashley Coffield, an analyst with the Washington, D.C.-based Partnership for Prevention, said that aspirin therapy is a cheap and effective way of reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. If doctors administered with the people who are at risk then it would have saved 80,000 lives annually. In case of lung cancer if doctors had asked all patients about their smoking habits and offered smokers brief counseling and recommendations for cessation therapies then it would have saved $3 billion in medical costs and saved many lives.
