Prevention Of Recurrent Leg Ulcers

Latest research shows that combination treatment proves to be the best option to substantially reduce the risk of recurrent leg ulcers.//

Surgery to remove part of the affected vein in addition to compression treatment was investigated as a new treatment option for leg ulcers .Surgery did not present any additional benefit in terms of venous ulcer healing, but recurrence rates were significantly reduced from 28 percent to 14 percent at one year.

500 patients were assessed by venous duplex imaging, or an ultrasound, and were randomly assigned either compression treatment alone or in combination with surgery. Venous leg ulceration is caused by problems with blood circulation and usually has a protracted course of healing. The condition can recur many times. It affects 1 percent to 2 percent of people. Traditional treatments include compression, leg raising and exercise.

Thus researchers conclude that most patients with chronic venous ulceration will benefit from the addition of simple venous surgery which will result in reduced numbers of patients suffering with this chronic relapsing condition.
