A research study finds that 95 percent of Americans have pre marital sex-sex before marriage and also that this is nothing new as American men //and women as far back as the 1940 were having premarital sex.

Researchers are disappointed that spending hundreds of millions of dollars advising young adults to wait until marriage to become sexually active is being wasted. One official disagreed and opined that even if the programs don't stop teens from having premarital sex it might delay it.

The awareness programs are conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, for the benefit of youngsters. "One of its values is to help young people delay the onset of sexual activity. The longer one delays, the fewer lifetime sex partners they have, and the less the risk of contracting sexually transmitted disease," said Wade Horn, assistant secretary for children and families.

"This is reality-check research. Premarital sex is normal behavior for the vast majority of Americans, and has been for decades," said study author Lawrence Finer.

Guttmacher Institute in New York conducted the study and the findings are published in the current issue of Public Health Reports. The institute studies sexual and reproductive issues.

The study surveyed around 38,000 people from the early 1980s to 2002 and also included findings from the federal National Survey of Family Growth and found that 95 percent of them had sex before marriage.
