Postnatal Care Is The Need Of The Hour

A study conducted by the Journal of Clinical Nursing found that 33% of women in UK experience painful intercourse after their delivery. //This study was conducted on 482 women who had some kind of sex related problems after child birth.

It was also found that these issues were more prominent in Asian women, older women and in women who had larger babies and longer deliveries. Painful intercourse was reported by 19% of women who had a Caesarean, 34% who had a normal birth and 36% of women who had an instrument-assisted birth. When sex related health issues were considered, it was lowest (51%) among Caesarean births and highest (77%) among instrument assisted births.

Forceps delivery contributed to higher levels of stress, urge, and continual incontinence. Asian women were more likely to report pain and continual urinary incontinence than their white counterparts.

Midwife Amanda Williams who conducted this study emphasizes the need for the continued health care support to women who have delivered. She also stresses that problems related to the perineal area (between the vagina and anus) should be addressed.

According to Dr Maggie Blott, a consultant obstetrician at London's King's College Hospital, women should have regular check-ups with their doctors after their delivery. She also reiterated the role of general physicians in identifying women with potential problems and ensuring that they were given the right kind of care and support.
