Positive Strokes & Life-Saving Information Eludes Stroke Patients

A new study has indicated the feeling of insecurity and neglect that stroke patients unwittingly contend with, especially post-discharge; they are not provided with the// necessary information/advice to maintain their health.

The report from the Stroke Association aptly embodies the sentiment of the sufferers in the title, ‘Nobody Told Me’. Indeed the report has enunciated the woes of stroke patients after discharge from the hospital, where the patients feel ill equipped to deal with their health. It was found that crucial information to prevent potential stroke was not provided. The patients were in the dark about healthcare and rehabilitation services.

Further, an estimated half of all stroke victims are not informed about alterations in the diet and nearly one third are ignorant about the ideal physical exercise. The information to stroke patients makes a lot of sense as there is a one third chance of a repeat stroke in five years, after the first one.

Joe Korner, director of communications at the SA said,” It is scandalous that people can be leaving hospital after a stroke without the vital information they need to help prevent another one occurring. This basic, yet life-saving information provides a safety net to thousands of stroke survivors who can easily fall through the gaps on leaving hospital - a time when they most need support. Failure to provide stroke patients with appropriate information about the services and support they will need in the community when they leave hospital creates a black hole.”
