Police annoyed over the AIDS lecture for China sex workers

According to a newspaper, an AIDS awareness class for sex workers in China had angered the police there.//

This lecture was conducted for a group of over 50 sex workers by the Center for Disease Control in northeastern Harbin last week, according to the Beijing News. It reported that the local police found the lecture to be "unacceptable".

"The usually underground prostitutes labeled their profession on their foreheads this time. Being unable to crack down, the police were really upset," it said. In China, approximately 6,50,000 people are infected with HIV/AIDS. According to health experts, majority of the new infections are spread by sexual contacts that is closely followed by drug abuse.

In spite of China having intensified its efforts in the drive against HIV/AIDS, public ignorance and fear is a major hindrance. Sex workers with condoms have been put behind bars for its possession.

"Education can be carried out in various forms," the Beijing News quoted an unnamed Harbin police officer as saying. "But it is hard for us to accept this kind of public lecture." Prostitution has been on the rise ever since market reforms in the early 1980s.
