Plan to Grade GPs Received a Lukewarm Response by BMA

According to the Royal College of GPs they plan to introduce a system in which the GPs would be graded by a Michelin-style rating system // . They are asking the government to vote in favor for the new scheme of grading but ministers and the British Medical Association were not very keen. According to this the surgeries were to be inspected by doctors, nurses and patients once in three years and awarded scores from one to three. It was a modification of the accreditation scheme.

But the BMA and government both refused to publicly back the scheme. They say that under the terms of the new GP contract they have to meet a series of performance indictors. Dr Hamish Meldrum, chairman of the BMA's GPs committee said that it would be a time-consuming one. On the other hand the disadvantage of the scheme is that it could be misused to rank doctors and have implications for workloads.
