As per the latest guidelines on food by the ministry of health in New Zealand, school children will be given pies and sausage rolls only once a term.// These guidelines on food will be launched in June. This has invoked mixed response from people across the country.

Pamela Peris feels the importance of educating people about the value of pie as against the fresh sandwich. She also adds that fatty food like pies and sausage rolls should be off the shelves of school canteen. She suggests that fruits, vegetable sandwiches should replace hams and lean beef, lean chicken slices should be served to kids. Oats and raisins are also good alternates to cookies and chips.

Some parents expressed displeasure in such ideas and felt that they can differentiate good and bad food for their kids. They did not like the idea of government telling them what food to give to their children.

According to Carol Thomson, as pies and sausage rolls are fattening food, it should be served occasionally. The quality of fat also cannot be ensured in some cases. Educating the people about nutrition is most vital and schools can help the government in this area.

Jakazembung feels that when children are restricted about something they will go all out to do that and feel proud too. If sausages and pies are not available in schools, they will buy these things in dairies and consume.
