Personality profiles of gamblers and substance abusers are similar

Individuals suffering from problem gambling behavior may share their personality// profiles with substance abusers like drug addicts and alcoholics.

Researchers have been able to identify personality traits of problem gambling behavior in people and have found marked semblance with those of substance abusers. Researchers in their research have pointed out that people who seek help for their problem gambling behavior may not represent the entire gamut of people who exhibit problem gambling behavior.

Previous studies have shown that problem gambling behavior may be linked with alcohol dependence and may also be associated with smoking and drug abuse. The new study shows that young adults, before they turn 21, are likely to have high scores for negative emotionality and impulsive behavior. They may also show tendency of risk taking behavior. Some common characteristics of these people may be nervousness, anger, worrying, aggressiveness, feeling victimized, and rebellious. The total personality profile of these people may be matched with those of substance abusers, said the researchers.
