Permanent Jobs Elude Qualified Nurses

Almost 75% of specialized nurses, fresh out of the college, are yet to land a permanent job, according to a recent survey//.

The study which sought responses from 500 newly qualified nurses and more than 2200 student nurses revealed that 71% of nurses’ search had not yet ended for a band 5 nursing job, which is the entry level for nursing careers. What is worse is the prevailing sentiment among nearly 86% of the nurses, who were not positive of securing a permanent placement in the near future. The study, undertaken to measure the consequence of the on-going recruitment freeze, said that almost nine out of ten nurses blamed job cuts and recruitment freeze for their plight.

RCN general secretary, Dr Beverly Malone, said: "Short-term, quick-fix recruitment freezes in the NHS not only disillusion staff, they have a direct impact on patient care. We desperately need these nurses in the NHS now - not sometime in the future when trusts have solved their financial problems."
