Washington – A certain batch of peanut butter, bought as early as Oct 2004, is declared unsafe for consumption and has been ordered// off the shelf by the U.S. Food and Safety authorities. It is thought that the contamination of peanut butter is behind the outbreak of salmonella.

Earlier, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration had ruled that all Peter Pan peanut butter bought since May 2006, including the complete range of Wal-Mart Inc.'s Great Value peanut butter with the batch code 2111 should beat a retreat from the market.

ConAgra Foods Inc. which manufactures both has ensured the recall of the potentially contaminated batches. As per the recent communiqué from the FDA, the entire batch of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter with product code 2111 onwards, including peanut butter toppings, dating back to October 2004, have been ordered off the shelf.

The FDA has advised consumers to dispose off the said products of peanut butter. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, many hundreds of people have taken ill last month following the outbreak of salmonella.
