A new study by researchers of St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, had found that long term stay in the intensive care unit //of the hospital after cardiac surgery can increase the mortality rate of the patients.

The researchers had looked into the medical history of 89 patients who had undergone various cardiac surgery procedures and survived the next 30 days and compared them with the medical history of similar patients but who were discharged 48 hours after the surgery.

The research showed that patients who spend on an average about 11 days post operation in the intensive care survived longer than the first year of surgery. However those patients who stayed in the intensive care unit post operation for an average of 16 days, did not live to see the second year from the completion of surgery. The patients who stayed in intensive care less had a 33% more rate of survival than the others who stayed more in intensive care units.

The researchers feel that one reason can be poor physical functions, vitality, more pain and lower overall health that had required the patients to stay for more days in the intensive care. This may increase the mortality rate of these patients as well.
