Statistics show that the number of deaths linked to Multidrug Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in the northwest has doubled in the past four years//. Patients are refusing to undergo a surgery due to this infection. On such case is that of a widow Freda Geldard, 63 who refuses to be operated due to the fear of acquiring MRSA. She says that she will travel to Bradford, West Yorks, to be treated privately because of the high risk in the local hospitals. In response to this situation the hospital authorities say that tougher measures are being implemented to prevent any further MRSA infections.

Freda said that her husband Brian, 70, was diagnosed with lung cancer, which was linked to asbestos exposure in the workplace. He was admitted to North Manchester General and after a few days the medical staff informed her that he had contracted MRSA. Bu she believes that he infection would have been a factor in his death. Hence she said that she has registered a complaint after his death. She also said that cleanliness has to be improved in that hospital otherwise treatment in Manchester would be a risk.

Spokesman for Pennine Acute National Health Service (NHS) Hospitals Trust said that the hospital is constantly updating its infection control procedures. But Campaigners MRSA Action UK wants all hospital infections present listed on the death certificate as many doctors fail to list the infection in the death certificate.
