Parents to Exercise Caution While Giving Cold Medicine to Infants

While giving cold or cough medicine to toddlers, parents need to be cautious as it may bring more harm to the children than to benefit them. //

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in the US has advised parents against giving over the counter (OTC) drugs to their children suffering from cold or cough without consulting their doctor.

An investigation that followed the death of three infants below the age group of six months in 2005 revealed that they had been given an over dose of nasal decongestant.

The extent to which cold medicines can bring harm to the children is not known as there is no actual dosage prescribed by the US food and Drug Administration for this age group of children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has always warned the medical fraternity not to prescribe cough suppressants or OTC drugs to children due to the varied side effects.

The best solution for parents is to make the children consume a lot of fluids and spend quality time with them while they are suffering from bouts of cold or cough.
