Teens consider their Parents to be the most authentic source for correct information about Sex, according to a new study. //
Among 1171 teens who took part in the study, conducted by the Canadian Association for Health Information, nearly 63% named the Parents as a key Knowledge disseminator about ‘Birds and The Bees’. Of course, teens also attribute some part of their knowledge to their experience in schools and discussion amongst friends.
"One of the most surprising results of the study was how parents underestimate their importance and the role teens expect them to play when it comes to their sexuality and sexual health," said Dr. Miriam Kaufman, spokesperson for the association.
Val Friesen, a Teen participant in the study, thought very highly of her mother, as her sole guidance about Sex, and that is probably the reason she is aware of the pitfalls of unprotected sex.
It was discovered from the survey that nearly 1/3 of teens were engaging in regular sexual activities, and of this group nearly two thirds engaged in oral sex. Nearly 25% of the sexually active teens indulged in unprotected sex.
90 per cent of the teens exhibited immense confidence in knowing all about sex, but in reality didn’t know much. Dr. Margo Lane, who led the Manitoba section of the study, said “They had much more knowledge about HIV than they did the [more common] infections that are more likely to threaten the health of an average teenager."
