Pakistani Boy Undergoes Liver Transplant In India

A liver transplant operation has been conducted on a six-year-old Pakistani boy at the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, Delhi. Hamza who underwent the surgery celebrates his birthday on 19 December 2005. // Anupam Sibal, Medical Director of the Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, said: 'The kid is still in ICU but is responding well to medication. Doctors are keeping a close watch and we hope his condition will be normal soon.'

He refused to give further details. 'It's too early to comment and we are not in a condition to give the details till late next week.'

However, sources in the hospital said the child was recovering fast and was out of deep slumber.

On 12 December, Hamza underwent a liver transplant that lasted for around 12 hours because a large part of his liver was not functioning.

'Thirty percent of the mother's liver from four different segments were taken to conduct the segmental liver transplant,' the hospital source said.

The source added: 'For the first few days the mother and child were in ICU but the mother is out now. Hamza is out of deep sleep and is looking much better. But doctors have asked him not to speak.'

Hamza is here with his parents and two other relatives. He was admitted to the hospital on 7 December and would remain there for about seven weeks for post-operative care.

The source also said Hamza's parents were feeling better. 'Now his parents are quite optimistic of returning to Pakistan on a happy note.'

Before the surgery, the child wanted to meet Indian cricket star Sachin Tendulkar, who complied with his wish.
