London: The packed lunch you give to your kid to eat in school could be unhealthy if it contains crisps and chocolates, says a health expert.//

"Most packed lunches are a nutritional disaster. However bad the school meals were, packed lunches are worse," said Helen Crawley, a nutritionist and senior lecturer at Kingston University in south west London, according to the online edition of the Daily Mail.

Schools should monitor the content of lunch boxes or ban them altogether, she said. Parents were packing them with crisps and chocolates because they were scared of disappointing their children.

She pointed to a recent report which showed packed lunches contained double the recommended intake of saturated fat and sugar and up to half the recommended salt intake.

Almost half of those surveyed had no fruit or vegetables.
