Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will inaugurate the first world youth meet on health here Nov 14, in which hundreds of participants from 37 countries will discuss a range of health issues. //
National and international health experts, about 10,000 students and 270 delegates from 37 countries will talk about issues ranging from smoking in schools to healthy gender relation at the five-day Global Youth Meet (GYM).
'The present and future health of children across the world is threatened by many factors such as degraded environment, unhealthy foods, tobacco marketing, unsafe roads and HIV-AIDS. The meet will help youngsters to promote and disseminate health-related knowledge,' said K. Sreenath Reddy, executive director of HRIDAY-SHAN, an NGO that is organising the event.
'While it is important to provide young people adequate information about how to protect their health, it's equally essential to ensure that the government and societal policies promote and support health as well,' said Reddy, who is also the head of the cardiology department at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here.
After the inauguration at the National Stadium, the GYM will move to Agra from Nov 15 to 18. On Nov 19, the meet will conclude in Delhi with the launch of the Youth for Health (Y4H) campaign.
Y4H will enable youths across the participating nations to interact and exchange ideas among themselves for better health practices.
Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the US, Russia, Argentina, Italy, France, Denmark, Ghana, Fiji, Iran and Zambia are among the countries that will participate in the event.
International experts like World Health Federation chief Janet Voute, Chris Dawe of the Clinton Global Initiative, Carolyn Dresler, head of the tobacco and cancer unit at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (France), and Robert Beaglehole, director of chronic disease and health promotion at
