PIL Raises The Issue Of Spurious Drugs

A PIL in the Bombay High Court today raised the issue of spurious drugs, demanding that state government be directed to take steps to curb the trade of such drugs. //

The High Court has directed the state government to file a reply in this regard by July 12.

The PIL was filed by Lakhpat Raj Mehta, who lost his son due to administration of spurious injection of the drug `Imipenam' at KEM hospital in Pune in March 2002.

Mehta had taken his two sons, Aman and Alpesh to the hospital following a minor mishap. He purchased the injection from KEM hospital's drug store. But the shot produced a lethal reaction in Aman, who died on April 6.

The injection was later found to be spurious, following which criminal case was initiated aginst the KEM authorities, which is still pending in the High Court.
